With three Top 10 singles and two best selling albums in less than a year’s time, it’s safe to say that Iggy Azalea made a solid run for the title of best female rapper back in 2014. Now, unfortunately, in 2016 the “Fancy” rapper has experienced quite the decline in terms of relevancy.
Although some find her considerably less important, the controversial star often finds her way into the headlines for reasons outside of her music; including social media arguments with Azealia Banks and misguided statements about Beyoncé’s Album “Lemonade.” In fact, Vulture has compiled a convenient time line of Iggy mishaps, called “Iggy Azalea’s History of Hip-Hop Controversy.”
As for her career, it’s been a slippery slope since the middle of last year when the rap star announced that she was canceling her Fall 2015 tour dates and pulled out of a performance at Pittsburgh Pride – not to mention the fact that the hip-hop community has always been hesitant in accepting her as an Australian rap artist.
So, what has Iggy been up to lately? Recently it’s seemed that the drama attached to her relationship with L.A. Laker Nick Young is more attention worthy than the effort she’s put into her music.
This time last year, the L.A. Lakers guard/forward asked Iggy to marry him at his 30th birthday party and their relationship has been a media worthy roller coaster ever since. After a cheating scandal and a series of breakup-makeups, the celebrity couple seemed to have gotten things back on track, but just last week, the NBA star tweeted a series of Drake Lyrics that sparked an assortment of questions about their engagement.
But contrary to popular belief, Ms. Iggy Azalea is has been working! Just recently, she took over Central park live from Good Morning America where she announced the forthcoming of her new album, “Digital Distortion,” which is set to released under Deaf Jam later this month. The video to her dance track single “Team,” has nearly 50 million views on YouTube after just being debuted a short 2 months ago.
When asked about the concept of her new album in an interview with GMA, Iggy said “It’s still super energetic and fun, but it’s a bit more aggressive and a little darker — a bit more grown-up, like me.”
Her fans are excited, of course, though she doesn’t seem to be turning any heads among the rest of the hip-hop world. Will she reclaim her status as an elite female MC? Hopefully she can pull it together with her upcoming album!
Anything is possible in Hip-Hop, right?
