Squeeze Radio, arguably the most iconic hip hop radio show of all time, is in danger of being pulled off the air after 20 YEARS! We need you to show a sign of your support by signing this online petition to save the Squeeze Radio show. The show was started by Bobbito Garcia and Stretch Armstrong in 1990 and featured such little known artists you may have heard of including Nas, Big Pun, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Cam'ron, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan, Big L, Fugees, Talib Kweli and Notorious B.I.G. In fact, this legendary Jay-Z and Big L freestyle was recorded live at Squeeze Radio in '95! Ten years ago, Sucio Smash inherited the reigns and has upheld the tradition of broadcasting the finest of what the hip hop underground has had to offer.
Sucio joined us at this year's A3C for the High Water Music (his label) showcase and explained to us the situation at WKCR, Columbia University's radio station. The administration has stated they no longer wish to have the volunteer services of community DJs, but would rather have the station run exclusively by students. Providing a broadcast outlet and educational forum for the student body is important but should not be mutually exclusive from incorporating members of New York City's community to volunteer their time and talents. It is important to note here even though Sucio has been the host for the past 10 years, he has also been joined by members of the student body. He has always kept the door open to students in a truly collaborative effort.
Squeeze Radio is an institution and to deprive a literal worldwide community of listeners who tune in each week would be a blemish on Columbia University. Please help support this cause by weighing in with your voice and signing the Save Squeeze Radio petition.
