In 2007, Common and Q-tip announce they were joining forces to create a supergroup called, The Standard. The two kept their focus on their solo careers and never released any music under the guise of a group. Now, nine years later, Nas seems to have jumped into the mix. The three are no strangers to each other. Q-tip has produced for Common and Nas, and they all have been featured on each other’s sons and album throughout their careers. Q-tip produced Nas’ “One Love” track from his Illmatic album, lending a verse for Common’s “Stolen Moments” track. Nas and Common have shared a track in 2011 on “Ghetto Dreams.” Obviously, Chemistry between them is not a problem. Nas was recently asked if he planned on recording with Q-tip. He responded with “definitely” making speculations of the supergroup seem true.
All three have proven that their lyrical ability is the cream of the crop and that they are still capable of exciting hip-hop fans with new verses. It would be great to see them create music together. The Standard won’t be the first supergroup to form this year. Chuck D, B-Real, and Rage Against the Machine have formed a supergroup, Prophets of Rage earlier this year and are currently on tour. Are supergroups the new trend for artists? If so, who will form a group next? For now, let’s just hope Nas, Common and Q-tip can give us some confirmation on The Standard soon.
