'Black Ink Chicago's' Phor proves his talents extend far beyond tattooing

Written by Joseph Tiller | Sep 28

Some people may recognize Phor from the VH1 show Black Ink Crew: Chicago. Aside from being a reality TV star and a tattoo artist for six years, Phor is putting all his focus on pursuing a rap career. Viewing himself as an outcast in the Chicago rap scene, Phor is blazing his own trail. The TV show has given him an extra boost to getting his name to more people. Even though reality TV stars usually have a difficult time becoming more than just that, Phor doesn’t put too much attention into it. He plans on letting his music speak for itself.

An artist at the core, Phor has the ability to create vivid imagery with pens, pencils and tattoo guns, and with words. Song’s like “Thinking Cap” illustrate a wish for his city to bring back the love and stop the violence. Phor walks in between the hardcore sound of drill music that Chicago is now known for and the super conscious vibe of the city’s underground scene. That has led him to be in his own lane and a bit of an stray. For Phor, it doesn’t seem as much of a burden to bare, as his fans consider him a rock star already. His only task is proving that to the rest of the world.

His latest release is Lightning Bug and is expected to be the project to introduce Phor to the masses as a rapper that should be taken seriously. A follow up from his Sacrafice project, Lightning Bug is 13 tracks of Phor letting listeners know who he is and what he’s about. One thing that Phor prides himself on and sets himself apart from other artists is his live performances. You can catch him at A Zae Production & Opposition Invasion showcase at this year’s A3C Festival & Conference.
