You can't name one acclaimed artist who has reached their level of success all on their own. In music (hip hop especially), you need a solid team around you to make sure that your career gets the attention it needs and deserves.

Building a Team -8389.jpgSatori Ananda moderated a panel of media and music professionals that explored the different components of a successful artist's team. DJ RootsQueen, Music Director of Zaytoven Beatz, stressed building relationships with DJs and podcasters. "We have the relationships with these blogs and other DJs to get your music on all the different streaming services," said DJ RootsQueen.

W.A.R. Media CEO, Guy Routte and Satori Ananda both agreed that artists don't need managers until they can pay them. This is crucial because in the beginning, managers usually do most of the extra work, such as booking and public relations, that may not necessarily be in their job description.

To have tangible work was the biggest piece of advice from Theory Communications co-founder Erica Hamilton. Websites, logos, and electronic press kits are things every artists needs and can get at A3C.

Finally, Da Dreak reminded the room full of artists and producers that, "The most important person on your team is you." He told stories of how timing played a huge role in his success. "Few of us in this room will get the chance to be in a room with someone who can change our lives,"said Dreak. "The difference is you have to know when it's your time."
