Hip Hop is more than just music. It’s a culture that impacts the way we think, talk, act and dress. According to a Spotify analysis, it’s the most popular genre in the world.Perhaps, at this very moment someone across the globe is rapping along to a Kendrick verse.
It’s pretty evident that there’s no other genre with an influence as strong as Hip Hop.
Throughout the years, Hip Hop’s influence has sparked numerous trends that complimented the genre’s musical era at that time. Remember over-sized white T’s and 24 inch rims?
Many trends have came and went, some of which make us laugh—or cringe. But other trends are still here today. Whether or not these trends will die is a mystery; but here are some that need to go ASAP:
Recently, we’ve seen a pattern of artists not only sounding the same but looking the same. Yes, the meaning of “trending” is “current style”. Conversely, there should be more artists going against the grain and setting the trends. That takes originality and courage.
9 out of 10, a Hip Hop video is going to have money, cars, liquor, and women. It’s been like that for over a decade. It would be refreshing to see an actual storyline or a visual with a bit more substance.
It seems as if there is a never-ending debate that highlights the golden era of Hip Hop and shades the new era of Hip Hop. A recent example of this is the newly-revealed XXL Freshman cover. I agree, Hip Hop fans (young and older) should respect the G.O.A.T.s. But we should also accept and appreciate the artists who are creating a whole new wave.
Shows such as Love & Hip Hop have definitely changed the game. It gave many people in the industry a platform as well as entertained millions of viewers watching at home. However, it’s getting extremely repetitive. As long as people keep tuning in, reality TV won’t be going anywhere.
