It’s only a matter of time before someone adds “Best Ad-Libs” as a category for an award show. Ad libs are a part of a rapper’s identity. Some rappers have a signature ad-lib. Rappers use ad-libs to fill in space in-between bars and to add personality to the track. Some rappers  ad-libs have certainly stood out more than others. Check out a list of rappers who are leading the pack.

Big Sean

Big Sean is one of the most charismatic rappers to make it big. Hailing from Detroit, Big Sean is known for spitting bars as tough as the city. His songs range from party tracks, such as “Dance(Ass)” to lyrical slaughters like “Paradise.” He has an ad-lib for each type of track. When Big Sean first started to make a name for himself in mainstream music, his ad-libs of choice were “Boy” and “I do it,” both spoken in a low monotone. He later changed his ad lib to the dramatic and slightly annoying “Oh God.”Big Sean has a long list of popular ad-libs and all of them have been catchy, and you can find yourself saying any one of them randomly.

Rick Ross

Rick Ross has developed an unmistakable persona as a boss. He is the head of Maybach Music Group and has become one of the most successful rappers in the game. His music mogul status would not be complete without a signature ad-lib. For a man of Ross’ stature, his “ugh” ad-lib is very fitting. When you accomplish a goal or just wake up feeling like a boss, a Rick Ross grunt is an appropriate expression.

Young Jeezy

Young Jeezy has created an identity for himself as the Snowman. When Jeezy came out, trap music was gaining prominence. His detailed lyrics of a life in the trap were exclaimed by his ad-libs. The famous “Aaaaa” and Chea” ad-libs were even sampled by Kanye West on the “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” song.

Chance the Rapper

It is very hard not to like Chance the Rapper. He creates music that feels good and his rapping skills are top notch. Being as unique as Chance is, an easily identifiable ad-lib is needed. An enthusiastic “igh” can usually mark the coming of a Chance the Rapper verse. It sounds like he’s been startled by something, but his fans have adopted the ad-lib and have no problem yelling it at the top of their lungs at his shows.

DJ Khaled

Right now DJ Khaled is the king of promo, anthems, and ad-libs. You know DJ Khaled had a hand in creating a song when he shouts “We da best.” When he’s not declaring to be the best, he’s urging us to “listen.” DJ Khaled’s ad-libs are inspirational and motivates you to be smart and to be loyal. Khaled’s ad-libs are keys to life, so pay attention.
