2373142.jpg1. BMF: The Rise and Fall of a Hip-Hop Drug Empire (2012)

Black Mafia Family was an organization that centered around one of the largest
cocaine rings in American history. This documentary goes into depth about the 10
year FBI investigation into the Black Family Mafia, founded by brothers Demetrius
and Terry Flenory in the late 1980s. They tried to legitimize their business in the
early 2000s by creating Black Mafia Entertainment, promoting artists such as Young
Jeezy and Bleu DaVinci. This documentary shows how BMF not only dominated the
drug culture in the United States, but also how they infused their empire with the
hip-hop industry.

Dope is a modern hip hop movie about a group of teens that gets caught up in a long
string of events after getting set up at a drug dealers party. This movie addresses
various stereotypes of kids growing up in the tough neighborhoods of Inglewood,
California. Starring A$AP Rocky, Quincy Brown, and Atlanta native Shameik Moore,
this drama/comedy is one that entertains and touches on the issues that many face
living in a poor, Black community.

This documentary tells the story of the founding creators of hip-hop music in Atlanta. It tells the story of Sleepy Brown, Ray Murray, and Rico Wade developing a unique sound that nobody had heard before and becoming the pioneers of their time. Featuring cameos from LA Reid, 2Chainz, Outkast and more, this doc teaches the history of hip-hop in Atlanta

This feature-length documentary tells the story of the Stones Throw Records based in Los Angeles, CA. Peanut Butter Wolf embraces talent to “cultivate and underground” scene in music. This movie is geared more towards an audience that has common interest, but nonetheless is entertaining to hip hop fans. The film features interviews from Common, to Quest Love, and Tyler the Creator and Snoop Dogg.

In 2012, after going on a journey to Jamaica and engaging in the local culture, Snoop Dogg became Snoop Lion. This film explores the hip-hop artists journey from when he was signed to Death Row Records, to the deaths of his friends (Tupac and Nate Dogg). They address Snoop’s criminal and his murder accusation. The documentary accompanied by his album,
Reincarnation showed the evolution of Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion focusing on his journey through Rastafarianism and his new focus on love and non-violence.

This documentary analyzes the murders of hip-hop stars Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace. The film features interviews from Ms. Wallace, Biggie’s mother in addition to the LAPD and witnesses of the  East Coast/ West Coast feud. An ex-cop claims there was organized crime between the LAPD, Los Angeles gangs, and Death Row Records, which led to the secrets and unsolved cases of two infamous murders.
